Annual Gas Safety Checklist for Pakistani Homes
A room-by-room seasonal checklist — rubber hoses, geyser flues, regulator age, ventilation, carbon monoxide risk — with the soapy-water leak test you can do yourself in ten minutes.
Almost every domestic gas accident in Pakistan comes from a short list of causes: a perished rubber hose, a geyser in an unventilated bathroom, a blocked flue, an old regulator, or an appliance nobody has looked behind in five years.
None of those is exotic and none of them fails without warning. They fail after months of being visibly worn while nobody looked. This checklist takes about an hour once a year, needs no tools beyond a torch and washing-up liquid, and covers the things that actually cause harm.
Before you start
If you can smell gas right now, do not start a safety inspection. Leave the building without touching any switch and call 1199 from outside. The gas leak guide has the sixty-second version. This checklist is for a house that seems fine.
Do this first: the whole-house leak test
Ten minutes, and it tests everything at once.
The meter test. Turn off every gas appliance in the house, including every pilot light. Then go to the meter and watch the smallest billing digit or dial for five minutes. It should not move at all. Movement with everything off means gas is escaping somewhere on your side of the meter. Our meter reading guide shows which digits to watch.
The soapy water test. Mix washing-up liquid and water until properly soapy. Brush or spray it onto every joint, connection and along the full length of every rubber hose. Bubbles forming or growing mean gas escaping. Mark the spot, turn off the supply to that appliance, and get it repaired before the appliance is used again.
Never test with a flame. Not a match, not a lighter, not a candle. This needs saying every time because people still do it.
The kitchen
Rubber hoses. The most common failure point in a Pakistani kitchen, by a wide margin. Run your hand along each one and look for:
- Cracks, especially near the ends where the hose flexes.
- Hardening or loss of flexibility — a hose that has gone stiff is a hose that is about to split.
- Melting, scorching or heat damage where it passes near a burner.
- Kinks, or a hose stretched taut across a gap.
- Any hose that is more than a few years old, regardless of appearance.
Replace hoses on a schedule, not on failure. They are inexpensive; the alternative is not.
Clamps and connections. Every hose should be properly clamped at both ends. A hose pushed onto a spigot and left is not a connection.
The cooker. Burners should light promptly and burn blue and steady. A yellow or orange flame, or one that lifts away from the burner, means incomplete combustion — clean the burner ports, and if it persists, get the appliance looked at. Incomplete combustion produces carbon monoxide.
Behind the cooker. Pull it out. This is where you will find the hose you had forgotten about, the connection somebody improvised, and five years of grease. Air needs to reach the appliance and you need to be able to reach the valve.
Ventilation. A kitchen with a gas cooker needs air movement — a window that opens, an extractor that works, or a ventilator that is not painted shut.
The bathroom and the geyser
This is where the deaths happen, so read this section properly.
Ventilation is not optional. A gas geyser in a sealed bathroom with a closed door and no ventilator consumes the oxygen in that room and produces carbon monoxide as combustion becomes incomplete. Every winter this kills people in Pakistan, and every single one of those deaths was preventable by a ventilator.
Check that:
- There is a permanent ventilation opening in the room, not just a window that is sometimes open.
- The ventilator is not blocked, sealed, taped over or painted shut — very common in winter, when someone blocks it to keep the cold out.
- The room is not the only air source for a geyser that should be flued outside.
The flue. If the geyser has a flue, follow it with your eyes from the appliance to the outside.
- Is it connected at both ends, properly, not resting near a joint?
- Is it blocked — a bird's nest, debris, a collapsed section?
- Is it corroded or holed anywhere along its length?
A disconnected or blocked flue puts combustion products into the room instead of outside. That is the mechanism.
The pilot light. If the geyser has a standing pilot, decide whether you need it burning year-round. In months when you are not using hot water, switching the appliance off entirely saves a continuous, small, pointless gas draw — see 18 ways to cut your gas bill.
Geyser age. Old water heaters fail in ways that matter. If yours is well past its expected life, replacing it is a safety decision rather than a comfort one.
The symptom pattern to know
Headaches, dizziness, nausea, unexplained drowsiness or shortness of breath affecting several people in the same house — and improving when everyone goes outside. That pattern is carbon monoxide, and carbon monoxide has no smell. If it fits your household, ventilate, get everyone out, and treat it as an emergency rather than a coincidence.
Heaters and the living areas
Never use a gas heater in a bedroom overnight, and never in a room with the door and windows sealed. A heater consumes the oxygen in the room it is in.
Check every heater's flame — blue and steady. Check for scorch marks on the wall or ceiling behind and above it.
Clear a space around it. Curtains, bedding, furniture, drying clothes — an appliance that produces an open flame needs a clear zone, and drying clothes over a heater is a recurring cause of house fires.
Check the connection and hose as you did in the kitchen.
Ventilation, again. A room with an unflued heater needs air in.
The meter and the supply line
Find the main shut-off valve and make sure you can actually reach and operate it. Do this now, in daylight, with no emergency happening. Show everyone else in the house where it is.
Look at the meter. It should be clean, dry, undamaged and readable. Report a fogged or damaged face rather than trying to clean it — and never open, adjust or tilt it. What counts as tampering explains exactly where the line is.
Check the meter box. Not being used to store anything, not obstructed, not painted over, cover intact. A blocked meter is also a meter that gets billed on estimates.
Look along the visible service pipe for corrosion, physical damage, or anything resting on or against it.
Never build over a gas line. A pipe enclosed inside new masonry is a leak you will not be able to find, in a place you cannot reach.
Regulators, valves and appliances generally
Regulator age. Regulators have a service life and they are a known failure point. If you do not know how old yours is, that is itself an answer.
Appliance valves. Every appliance should have a working isolation valve you can turn off. Test that each one actually turns.
Unused connections. An old capped-off point where an appliance used to be should be properly sealed, not left with a hose end tucked behind a cupboard.
Who does the work. Gas fitting is not a domestic DIY task. Use someone competent for anything involving pipework, and report anything you suspect is wrong on SSGC's side of the meter through the complaint process rather than adjusting it yourself.
The seasonal version

Gas safety questions
How often should I replace the rubber gas hose?
On a schedule of a few years rather than waiting for a visible problem, and immediately if it is cracked, hardened, scorched or kinked. Hoses are inexpensive and they are the most common failure point in a Pakistani kitchen.
Why is my gas flame yellow instead of blue?
A yellow or orange flame means incomplete combustion, usually from blocked burner ports, a dirty appliance or insufficient air. It matters because incomplete combustion produces carbon monoxide. Clean the burner; if it stays yellow, have the appliance looked at rather than living with it.
Is it safe to use a gas geyser in a bathroom?
Only with permanent, unblocked ventilation and, where fitted, an intact flue that vents outside. A geyser in a sealed bathroom consumes the room’s oxygen and produces carbon monoxide as combustion goes incomplete. Blocking the ventilator to keep the cold out is what turns this from a risk into a fatality.
How do I test for a gas leak at home?
Brush soapy water onto joints, connections and hoses and look for bubbles forming. Separately, turn off every appliance and pilot light and watch the smallest dial on the meter for five minutes — any movement means gas is escaping. Never use a flame to test for a leak.
Do I need a carbon monoxide detector?
It is a genuinely worthwhile purchase for any home with a gas geyser or an unflued heater, because carbon monoxide has no smell and the early symptoms resemble ordinary tiredness. It is not a substitute for ventilation and a clear flue — it is a warning that those have failed.
Can I do gas pipe work myself?
No. Anything involving pipework, fittings or the meter should be done by someone competent, and work on SSGC’s side of the meter should be reported rather than touched. Interfering with the meter specifically is treated as tampering, with serious financial consequences.
The short version
Once a year, walk the house with a torch and a bowl of soapy water. Look at hoses, flames, flues and ventilators. Find the shut-off valve and make sure everyone knows where it is.
