How to Read Your SSGC Gas Meter Correctly (Dial and Digital)

A step-by-step guide to reading both dial-type and digital SSGC meters, working out your own monthly consumption, and catching a wrong meter reading before you pay for it.

Reading your own gas meter takes about ten seconds a month, and it is the only thing that turns "this bill seems too high" into "this bill is wrong, and here is the evidence". Everything else — the tariff tables, the calculators, the complaint process — depends on knowing what your meter actually says.

This guide covers both meter types you will find on an SSGC connection, the digits that count and the ones that do not, and how to turn two readings into a consumption figure you can check the bill against.

Where the meter is, and how to approach it

On a domestic connection the meter is usually on an outside wall, inside a boundary-wall box, or just inside the entrance near the service pipe. It is a sealed instrument: the glass or plastic face is meant to be read, not opened.

Before you go and look:

  • Take a torch, never a flame. This should be obvious and it is still worth saying, because people do use lighters to see dials in the dark.
  • Do not force a jammed cover. A stuck meter box is a job for SSGC, not for a screwdriver.
  • If you can smell gas, stop. Do not touch any switch, do not use your phone at the meter. Move away and call 1199. Our gas leak guide sets out the order of actions.

Never break a seal

Meters carry seals. Opening, cleaning, adjusting, tilting or otherwise interfering with a meter is treated as tampering, and the penalties are severe — a detection bill plus a fine, with the burden of disproving it falling on you. What counts as tampering explains where the line is. Reading the meter is always fine. Touching it never is.

Digital and electronic meters

Newer installations show a straightforward row of digits, like a car odometer.

  1. Read the main counter left to right and note the whole numbers.
  2. Ignore digits on a red background, digits after a decimal point, and anything in a separate small window. Those are fractions of a cubic metre used for leak testing, not for billing.
  3. Write the figure down with today's date. The date matters as much as the number.

Some electronic units cycle through several screens — total volume, then a rate, then a diagnostic code. The billing figure is the cumulative total volume, which is the largest number and the one that only ever increases.

Dial-type meters

Older meters have four or more small circular dials, and they are genuinely easy to misread because adjacent dials rotate in opposite directions. One runs clockwise, the next anti-clockwise, and so on.

How to read them:

  1. Work from the leftmost dial to the right — left is the highest place value.
  2. Follow each dial's own printed direction. The numbers around the face tell you which way it turns.
  3. When a pointer sits between two numbers, take the lower one. A needle just past 7 and heading for 8 is a 7. This is the rule people break most often, and it inflates readings.
  4. When a pointer looks exactly on a number, check the dial to its right. If that dial has not yet passed zero, the pointer has not actually arrived — use the lower digit.
  5. Ignore any dial marked as a test dial or set on a red face.

Read all the dials in one pass, in order, and write the digits down as you go. Trying to remember four digits while squinting at a fifth is how transposition errors happen.

Photograph it, every time

This is the step that changes your position from opinion to evidence.

A phone photo carries a timestamp in its metadata. A dated photograph of your meter, taken monthly, is the difference between saying a bill looks wrong and demonstrating that the present reading on it could not possibly be right.

  • Frame the whole meter, including the serial or meter number, not just the digits.
  • Get close enough that the digits are legible when you zoom in later.
  • Keep the photos in one album. A year of them is a complete consumption record.

If a billing dispute ever goes as far as a formal complaint, this album is the single most useful thing you can attach to it.

Turning two readings into consumption

The arithmetic is simple. Most SSGC domestic meters count in cubic metres, and bills are usually expressed in HM3 — hundreds of cubic metres.

Present reading − Previous reading = cubic metres used

Cubic metres ÷ 100 = HM3

A worked example, using the same figures you would see on a bill:

Read on the same date each month

SSGC reads on its own schedule, which is not the first of the month. If you always read on, say, the 20th, your figures will not line up exactly with the bill's period — and that is fine. What matters is that your own months are comparable with each other, and that your reading on any given date is plausible against the bill's. A present reading far ahead of what your meter showed a week later is a red flag; a few cubic metres of difference is just timing.

What to do if the numbers do not make sense

The present reading is lower than the previous one. A gas meter only counts upwards, so this means one of three things: the digits were transposed while copying, the meter reached its maximum and rolled over to zero, or the meter was replaced and the new unit started from a lower figure. Check your own copying first. If the figures are right, photograph the meter and report it before the next bill is generated — an unexplained rollover left alone produces a very strange bill indeed.

Consumption looks impossibly high. Check the previous reading on the bill against your own photo from last month. If the bill's previous reading is lower than your photo showed, an earlier month was under-estimated and this month is the correction. That is annoying but not an error. If the present reading is ahead of what your meter shows today, the reading is estimated or wrong, and that is worth challenging.

Consumption is suspiciously round, or identical to last month. Often the sign of an estimated reading, used when a meter reader cannot get access. Estimates get trued up later, which is why a low estimate is frequently followed by a bill that looks shocking.

The meter is turning with everything switched off. Turn off every appliance including pilot lights, then watch the smallest billing dial or digit for a few minutes. Movement with nothing running suggests a leak somewhere on your side of the meter. Do not investigate with a flame — call 1199 and read the annual gas safety checklist.

Reading the meter is also how you cut the bill

Monitoring is not just defensive. Once you can measure consumption weekly, every change you make becomes testable.

  • Turn the geyser thermostat down and read the meter a week later. You will see the effect.
  • Read before and after a week of cooking with lids on pans. Small, but real.
  • Compare a week with the geyser pilot light off against a week with it on.

Meter reading questions

Which digits on the meter do I use for billing?

The whole numbers in the main counter, read left to right. Ignore anything on a red background, anything after a decimal point, and any dial marked as a test dial — those measure fractions of a cubic metre for leak detection and are not part of billing.

Does my meter read in cubic metres or cubic feet?

Most SSGC domestic meters count cubic metres. The unit is usually printed on the meter face. Bills then express consumption in HM3, which is simply hundreds of cubic metres, so 100 m³ used is 1.00 HM3.

Why do adjacent dials turn in opposite directions?

It is a mechanical consequence of how the gear train drives them, and it is normal. Each dial has its number sequence printed in its own direction of rotation, so follow the printed numbers rather than assuming clockwise.

Can I submit my own reading to SSGC?

A self-reading does not replace SSGC’s official reading. What it gives you is evidence: a dated photograph plus your own arithmetic is a concrete basis for a billing complaint, which is a far stronger position than saying the bill feels too high.

How often should I read the meter?

Once a month on roughly the same date is enough to catch a wrong bill. Weekly readings are worth it temporarily if you are trying to cut consumption, because you can see the effect of a change fast enough for it to be motivating.

The meter face is fogged or damaged and I cannot read it.

Report it rather than trying to clean or open it. A meter you cannot read is a meter that will be billed on estimates, and estimates are what produce correction bills later. Log it through the helpline or the complaint process and keep the complaint number.

The habit, in one paragraph

Once a month, walk to the meter, photograph it, and note the number. That is the entire practice. It costs you two minutes a year in aggregate and it gives you a complete, timestamped consumption record — which means the next time a bill looks wrong, you will know within thirty seconds whether it is, and you will have the evidence to say so.
