That is why a small rise in usage can produce a large rise in the bill.

How an SSGC domestic bill is actually built
Five steps, in this order. Once you have seen them once, most 'why is my bill so high' questions answer themselves.

Units consumed
Present reading minus previous reading, in HM3. This is the only part that depends on you.

Convert to MMBTU
HM3 × heating value. Around 3.53 MMBTU per HM3, though it moves slightly by area and month.

Apply the slab rate
Find the slab your consumption lands in, then price the whole month at that rate. This is the step that produces bill shocks.

Add fixed charges
A flat monthly charge by category, plus meter rent of Rs 40. These apply even at zero consumption.

Add GST
18% on the gas charge plus fixed charges.

Add arrears
Anything unpaid from earlier months, plus any late payment surcharge. A sudden jump usually lives here.
Slab rate vs telescopic — why the calculator shows both
Under the slab-rate method the rate of your final slab applies to every unit you used that month. Under a telescopic method each slab charges only the units that fall inside it, like income tax bands. Domestic SSGC bills are normally worked out on the slab-rate basis, which is why crossing a boundary hurts — but seeing both figures side by side makes the size of that effect obvious.

Will this match my actual SSGC bill exactly?
Close, but not to the rupee — and it is honest to say so. Three things move the number: the heating value applied to your area that month, whether your account is billed as protected or non-protected, and any arrears or adjustments SSGC has carried forward. Use this to sanity-check a bill or plan ahead, not as an invoice. Always pay the amount printed on the bill from SSGC's own portal.
What is HM3 and where do I find mine?
HM3 means hundred cubic metres — the unit SSGC meters record. Your consumption for the month is the present reading minus the previous reading, and both are printed on the bill. Why does a tiny increase in usage raise my bill so much?
Because domestic gas is billed on the slab-rate method: the slab you land in prices the entire month's consumption, not just the units above the boundary. Cross from 1.00 to 1.01 HM3 and every unit that month is re-priced at the higher rate. The calculator flags your remaining headroom for exactly this reason — and the tariff guide works through the arithmetic.
Am I a protected or non-protected consumer?
Look at the tariff or category field on your bill. Protected consumers are domestic users who stay inside the low-consumption band every month and meet SSGC’s criteria; everyone else is non-protected. If your bill does not say “Protected”, you are almost certainly on non-protected rates — and if you believe that is wrong, it is worth querying, because the difference is large.
What is the heating value and should I change it?
The heating value converts your HM3 into MMBTU, which is what the tariff is priced against. It reflects the energy content of the gas supplied to your area and moves a little month to month. The calculator starts at 3.53, a typical figure. If your bill prints its own heating value, type that in for a closer estimate.
Is the calculator free, and does it store anything?
Free, and it stores nothing. All the arithmetic happens in your browser — no numbers are sent anywhere, and there is nothing to sign up for.
