SSGC vs SNGPL: Which Company Supplies Your Gas?

A surprising number of gas problems in Pakistan come down to a single confusion: people search for the wrong company. They look up a bill on the wrong portal, download the wrong app, call the wrong help line, and conclude the system is broken when in fact they are asking the right question of the wrong organisation.

There are two distribution companies, they serve different halves of the country, and they share almost nothing operationally — not systems, not consumer numbers, not records, not help lines. Getting this right takes ten seconds and saves days.

The short answer

SSGC — Sui Southern Gas Company serves Sindh and Balochistan.

SNGPL — Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited serves Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Islamabad.

So:

This site covers SSGC — Sindh and Balochistan. If your address is in Punjab, KP, Islamabad or AJK, you need SNGPL and nothing on this site will match your bill.

Why the distinction matters so much

These are two separate companies with two separate infrastructures. In practical terms:

Consumer numbers are not interchangeable. An SSGC consumer number entered into SNGPL's system returns nothing, and the reverse is equally true. Bills are not visible across companies. Neither utility can see the other's billing records, so neither can help you with the other's bill.

Payment channels are separate. Paying an SNGPL bill through a channel that credits SSGC does not settle the SNGPL bill. The money goes somewhere, and getting it back is a reconciliation exercise you do not want.

Complaints are separate. Calling one about the other gets you politely redirected, having lost the time.

Offices are separate. SSGC's zone offices are in Sindh and Balochistan. There is no SSGC office in Lahore that can help with an SNGPL bill.

What is actually the same

Enough that the confusion is understandable:

Tariffs are set by the same regulator. OGRA — the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority — notifies domestic gas tariffs, and the slab structure applies nationally. The protected and non-protected categories and the slab boundaries are the same idea in both networks, so our slab rates guide is conceptually useful either way, even though you should verify current figures for your own supplier.

The billing mechanism is the same. Meter read in cubic metres or hundreds of cubic metres, converted to MMBTU using a heating value, charged at the slab rate for your consumption band, plus fixed charges, meter rent and GST. Our bill calculator models that mechanism.

Safety is identical, and so is the number. 1199 is the gas emergency line. Physics does not care which company owns the pipe — everything in the gas leak guide and the safety checklist applies to any household in Pakistan with a gas connection.

Both are majority state-owned and both report to the same regulator, which is why their consumer-facing processes resemble each other so closely.

Where the two genuinely differ

Beyond geography, the differences worth knowing:

Network age and condition varies by area, which is why pressure experiences differ between cities in ways that have nothing to do with which company is "better".

Regional office structures differ. SSGC runs Karachi as a set of numbered zones plus regional offices for Hyderabad, Nawabshah, Sukkur, Larkana, Quetta and Sibi. SNGPL's structure follows its own regions.

Digital services have evolved at different paces, so the exact features in each company's app and portal are not identical even though both cover bills, history and complaints.

If you have been searching the wrong one

A few consequences worth untangling:

"My consumer number does not work." Check the company name on the bill first. This resolves it far more often than any troubleshooting of the number itself.

"I paid and the bill still shows unpaid." If you paid through a channel that credited the other company, that is a reconciliation problem — take your payment receipt to the company you actually owe, and separately pursue the misdirected payment with the channel you used. What about moving between the two regions?

If you move from Karachi to Lahore, you do not transfer anything — you close one relationship and open another.

• Settle the SSGC account fully. Any arrears follow the connection, and they will surface later for whoever holds it.
• If the property is being sold, complete a name change and transfer so a future bill is not still in your name.
• If a connection is being permanently disconnected rather than transferred, that is when a security deposit refund becomes claimable.
• At the new address, the account is with SNGPL, with its own consumer number, its own portal and its own app.

Nothing carries over. Not the consumer number, not the payment history, not the eBill registration.

The short version

Sindh and Balochistan: SSGC. Punjab, KP, Islamabad and AJK: SNGPL.
